新型コロナウィルス感染症についての学長からのメッセージ（2020年8月6日付）
春に緊急事態宣言が出され、その後、いったんは落ち着くかと思われた感染状況も、再び春以上の厳しい状況となっています。このような状況の中で、みなさんも、外出を控え、経験のないオンライン授業への対応や部活の停止などで心身ともにたいへんなストレスを感じていることと思います。
そのような状況の中、このたび、本学から新型コロナウィルス感染者が確認されました。しかし、私はそれを「残念なこと」であるとか「不幸にも」とは思っていません。分からないことがまだまだ多いウィルスですから、細心の注意を払っていても、誰にでも起こりうる事柄であり、想定しておくべきことだと思うからです。
世間では、感染者を特定し誹謗中傷するという悲しい行為が後を絶ちません。本学の学生であるみなさんには、共感と想像力をもって対処して欲しいと思います。相手の立場で考え、寄り添う姿勢です。それは、私が外大生のもっとも素晴らしい美質であると信じているものです。様々な局面で発揮され、学内外の人びとに外大の魅力を発信し、本学の評価を高めてくれている「大学の宝」といって良いものです。コロナ禍の中でも、その姿勢を貫き、外大生らしさを失わないで欲しいと思います。
これまでとは異なった日々が続き、出口が見えない不安は、理性的な判断を鈍らせてしまいます。平時なら失笑してしまうような流言や不確かな情報に惑わされそうになることもあるかもしれません。そこで知性を発揮し、批判精神を働かせましょう。将来みなさんが活躍する世界では、想定外のことがいくらでも起こります。そのときパニックに陥らず的確に対処する。それが本学での学びで身につけて欲しい力です。社会が危機に浮き足立ったとき「不寛容」が生まれます。みなさんには、そうした中でも、寛容と共感を忘れずに、将来の自分に恥じない対応をお願いしたいと思います。みなさんはその期待に応えてくれると確信しています。
本学のInterpretation Study Group (通訳勉強会)が本学の留学生向けに英訳しました。
以下、英訳です。
Dear Students,
The pandemic seemed to have calmed down after the state of emergency that started back in the spring, but it has once again become even more serious. You have undergone new styles of lectures and cancellation of club activities while staying at home. I understand that you have felt tremendous stress both physically and mentally.
In those situations, it has recently been reported that one of the students at KCUFS was confirmed to have been infected with COVID-19. However, I do not regard this as shame. Since the information about the virus includes uncertainties, we should keep it in our mind that no matter how careful we are, this can happen to anyone. We should be humble about the unknown.
Unfortunately, some people constantly identify infectees and calumniate them. I hope that our students behave with sympathy and imagination, which means the attitude with consideration of their situations and them. That is the most wonderful virtue that I believe our students have. The virtue is surely "the pride of our university" since it is shown on a lot of occasions, transmits the attraction of our university, and helps our university to be highly evaluated. I believe that our students will keep that attitude and be always a KCUFS student.
Our lives are not the same as before, with no clear end in sight. This can damage our reasonable thinking. We may be puzzled by rumors and inaccurate information that we would otherwise not take seriously. Therefore, it is time to activate our intelligence and critical thinking. When you start your career, there will be a countless number of unexpected events. But let us not panic but respond in an appropriate manner. And that is the ability we want you to develop at KCUFS. When the world faces a crisis and instability, "intolerance" is rampant. But please do not forget to be tolerant and empathize with others so that you will be proud of your future self. I am confident that you can do it.
